Situated amongst the tightly woven rows of worker’s cottages bordering the city and Melbourne Cricket Ground, this double-fronted exception is transformed to become a conduit for illumination and delight. Extended outward and upward, including a rooftop pool and garden, the new works preserve the existing heritage features and expand the footprint to create a serene and poetic family home. Whist its interior layout and construction are a direct response to living requirements and the tight urban context, its character and atmosphere derive from memory and experience and the desire to create a true escape from the world outside.
